A representative of the national CanWork research initiative, which focuses on supporting women returning to employment after breast cancer, has highlighted the urgent need for more inclusive workplace practices and support systems.
Speaking during a radio interview, Michelle Lowry outlined the challenges many survivors face when transitioning back into the workforce, including ongoing physical recovery, emotional wellbeing, and the process of workplace reintegration. She explained that these barriers can significantly impact confidence, productivity, and long-term career progression.
The CanWork study aims to address these issues by developing practical, evidence-based supports shaped by both research findings and the lived experiences of breast cancer survivors. The initiative seeks to provide guidance not only for individuals but also for employers navigating how best to support staff returning after serious illness.
Lowry emphasized that greater awareness is needed among employers and policymakers to ensure that women are not disadvantaged in their return to work. She noted that flexible policies, understanding workplace cultures, and targeted supports are critical to improving outcomes for survivors.
The CanWork team is continuing to encourage public engagement with the study as it works to inform policy and create more supportive pathways for breast cancer survivors across Ireland.
