Lelia Doolan, the 91-year-old broadcaster and activist, has called on the public to “stand up – and walk – for peace,” following her appearance on the GOCOM Radio Breakfast Show today.
Doolan, who has witnessed decades of global conflict including war, apartheid and genocide, is set to lead a symbolic walk from Shannon Airport to Dáil Éireann, beginning on March 31. The initiative is aimed at highlighting opposition to the use of Shannon Airport by US military aircraft and advocating for Irish neutrality.
The two-week protest will see participants travel along the old road to Dublin, joined by community groups and peace activists. Organisers expect the walk to reach the capital by April 14 or 15.
The campaign draws attention to long-standing protests—dating back over 30 years—against US military use of Shannon Airport. Participants also plan to call for the passage of the Occupied Territories Bill and for stronger adherence to Ireland’s obligations under international law.
Described as an inclusive event, members of the public are encouraged to join the walk for any distance, whether “a step, a mile, or a song.”
